I'd like to connect cmavnode to ardupilot sitl and use it in place of mavproxy (which is very cpu intensive if just using as a proxy). But looks like ardupilot sitl only supplies tcp. Is this not currently possible with cmavnode?

Correct, not currently possible, tcp is on the roadmap
