For these workshops, you will need to install two pieces of software: the NVDA screen reader and the Anaconda distribution for the Python programming language. You will find more information on this software in the below FAQ.

<h3 id="orgheadline12">Who is leading these workshops?</h3>
<div class="outline-text-3" id="text-orgheadline12">
<p>
The first three workshops in this series will be led by Dr. Patrick Smyth (Iota), a blind consultant and educator. The final two workshops will be led by Sarah Kane, a blind astronomer and Marshall scholar. These workshops are made possible by a generous grant from Pandas and NumFOCUS. Special thanks to Patrick Hoefler (Pandas core contributor) for support of this initiative.

<p>
Everyone who cares to participate is welcome at these workshops. However, bear in mind that the workshops will emphasize the use of a screen reader. When possible, workshop leaders will provide instructions for sighted or low vision participants as well.

<h3 id="orgheadline14">What is NVDA? Why are you using it?</h3>
<div class="outline-text-3" id="text-orgheadline14">
<p>
NVDA is a free-of-cost and open source screen reader intended to allow the blind to use a Windows computer. We have chosen it because it is the most functional, widely available screen reader for Windows. Even if you are a JAWS user, we recommend you use NVDA during these workshops, as instructions will be specific to NVDA.

<h3 id="orgheadline15">What is Anaconda? Why are you using it?</h3>
<div class="outline-text-3" id="text-orgheadline15">
<p>
Anaconda is a distribution for the Python programming language, meaning it is Python with some additional tools and features included. We have chosen Anaconda because it comes with needed libraries such as Pandas pre-installed, and because the Anaconda prompt provides a way to avoid common issues for new users. Not all of Anaconda's functionality is accessible with a screen reader, but Anaconda Prompt is accessible, and we will be using that utility to access Python.

<h3 id="orgheadline16">Will I need a text editor for these workshops?</h3>
<div class="outline-text-3" id="text-orgheadline16">
<p>
You will not need a text editor for the initial workshops. If a text editor is required in later workshops, we will send installation instructions separately.

<p>
Consider familiarizing yourself with the NVDA screenreader before the workshop series. We assume no knowledge of Python or programming in general.
