To be honest, I'm not convinced for the idea of Phone having access to the camera just to scan QR codes. I'm more for using specialized apps for certain tasks. For example, you can use an app like QR Scanner, and if the QR code has a phone number, just share it with the Phone app. Also, we have already requests to support QR codes in other apps, where it's IMHO more suitable: |

Hi all,
it is a phone integration feature. Also it is sufficient to use a library and an external qr reader to just scan a string like: atdt +1555887893
The reason here is that if you install phone on a old android burner phone you may not want to have all your contacts on said phone as it may be seized while you are demonstrating for higher taxes and more and better payed cops.
So having a qr reader feature helps you to read the phone number from a piece of paper or an contact app that displays the qr.
so you can have perfect red/black separation using a burner phone and a tablet (holds sensitive data) or a piece of paper with some need to know phone numbers.
So this feature is needed for rather paranoid people. Also it helps you to call from a list displayed on computer screen for better integration.
So please integrate it, or advice me how to do it, and I will send you a patch when I was successful…
Cheers

the use case is to just hold the phone with over the qr code, then press phone app and the app has a button at the dial pad that says read qr
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
* 0 #
Read QR
or dial pad the other way round
789
456
(btw why is it that number block has the key reversed in comparision to the numpad on key phones ;-)
So you just press scan qr and it says in a popup dial +97123298333
yes no
Thats it. No complicated copy paste and so on.
Why?
It is to ease operation for dissidents who are lazy as every body is.
having to copy paste qr is a pain, so I store my contacts on the burner phone.
I have nothing to hide ….
So it shall be so easy that people engage it as a simple to use
opsec encancement method
Why we dont have gnupg in every email?
Because usability is a pain.
I would like to use contacts se pro to display said atdt +nuber string (old modem times)
so I would modify it to display the code with a special button.
The tablet in the use-case is air-gapped (amazon kindle fire with android and no wifi, bt -both disabled, or having missing kernel modules) and can share only using the screen.
What is better? fosify contacts or contacts pro se?
https://f-droid.org/packages/de.ritscher.simplemobiletools.contacts.pro/
https://github.com/openfnord/Simple-Contacts-Pro-SE
or
https://github.com/FossifyOrg/Contacts
I want to have contacts to be compliant to CardDAV and vCard standards (RFC 6352, RFC 6350) as contacts.pro claims in its readme. If I touch it, I want to go with the better “contacts”.
so the better contacts shows qr atdt +755656565 and phone calls putin and asks before :-)
Cheers

As I understand not wanting to keep contacts on such a phone, I don't understand why you can't use an external app for scanning QR codes. As I wrote in my previous message:

Suggestion to extend the app to support dialing numbers from a scanned qr code
atdt+
For pc screen integration: dial number on the screen. just hold the phone next to the monitor...
CTI feature of pbx systems simulated by qr code and smartphone camera.
This is also handy for red & black separation where this dialer sits on the black burner phone (old android) while a modified simple contacts pro se will present a qr code for the dialer to be dialed:
https://github.com/openfnord/Simple-Contacts-Pro-SE
(I want to use this as this is compatible with RFCs and by default it will be compatible with RFCs not only by choosing an option as in the upstream code)
If the fossify contacts is compatible with the RFC 6352, RFC 6350 let me know. Then I would integrate there.
So contacts shall and Phone shall scan the dialcode and ask if you really want to dial this, and if yes you get an instant call setup, without any typing, nice, aint it?
see&dial.
Just hold the burner phone on the qr code presented by the contacts pro se app (to be modified) and get a screen popup:
{ BLING! }
dial +1 555 09992
Martin Tombstone
YES // NO
Name and phone number is to be transferred in qr code.
maybe only the phone number as the black phone needs to get no extra info.
need to know is only the phone number.
So keep it like that:
qr: atdt +1 555 09992
message
{ BLING! }
dial +1 555 09992
YES // NO
Yes dials number, no just ignores it and clears the dialog.
Burner phone on demo or risky travels:
have a paper addressbook with qr codes and names / nicknames printed on paper. you can dispose of the paper and the burner phone if needed.
Future Option: Add a salt to the qr code so the app knowing the salt could xor the qr code to get the correct result.
Police, nosy customs of "enemy country" can only get garbage as the salt is a one time pad (used only for one gig/travel/demonstration etc). So enter the pad into phone and it is hidden there, have an encrypted burner phone.
produce an encrypted / onetime pad salted qr-qode paper address book and have more freedom.
Better crypto may be used, as there are known plaintext attacks against the shared pad, if it is shared for all phone numbers of the "gig".
So if you have a better idea for the paper address book, just tell me, lets discuss it.
