Kind of request

Changing existing functionality

Enhancement Description

As brought up in #481 Currently the order in which the various data adapters do their slicing, renaming etc. is inconsistent (for good reason currently). It would be good to make sure they do this in a consistent manner so this becomes easier to reason about. This will require a slight refactor and might change existing behaviour

Use case

We want to be able to clearly communicate to the user in which order the things happen so it is easier for them to reason about.
