Ethnographic data on post-marital residence, descent and subsis- tence of Sino-Tibetan groups were obtained from ethnographic publi- cations, government censuses, World culture Encyclopaedia (www. everyculture.com), Murdock's Ethnographic Atlas (Murdock, 1967), and historical records where possible. References to proto-Sino-Tibetan groups in historical records dated from 109 BCE to 1370 CE were all accessed via 中華經典古籍庫 (Zhonghua Ancient Books Database) at http://publish.ancientbooks.cn/docShuju/platform.jspx. If more than one type of residence rules or descent are found in a group, the primary type (i.e. the most frequent type) was used for analysis. If no information is available to determine the most frequent type, all types were used for analysis. 14 groups in the Ethnographic Atlas were independently corroborated with data extracted from various sources, 3 groups were collected just from EA, other 81 groups were from various resources. The ethnographic and historical sources are shown in the SI.
