Remote Server Options

Hi,

I’m looking for help selecting remote server options for the Allsky website and am totally lost regarding what type of site/service I need to look at renting.

I’m currently looking at the IONOS website as I’ve seen in the discussions that a couple of people are using them for the remote server. The issue for me is that there are so many options that I’m not sure if I need to be looking at website building, or web hosting which I think is what’s been mentioned in the discussions. If it is hosting, is it then web hosting (PHP 7 and higher OPcache), VPS hosting or PHP extended support hosting?

For a newbie like me it’s a bit of a minefield. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

I have been using IONOS for 20+ years and am happy. I have the Windows something-or-another package which is no longer available. Linux packages should also work.
You don't need much - just some disk space (Allsky itself is only a couple GB so base your needs on how many days images you want. Mine is unlimited but I'd think 100 GB would last a long time.
IONOS supports PHP 8 which is good.
I believe "website building" is if you will build a website, e.g., for a store or a club. You want "web hosting" since you will be hosting the Allsky Website.
I don't know what OPcache or VPS are so you don't need them. Ditto for "PHP extended".
Make sure you have at least one domain name (e.g. markallsky.com) with SSL (for https access) and at least one ftp account.
You don't need email but it doesn't hurt.
You don't need subdomains (e.g., test.markallsky.com).

@EricClaeys does Allsky save the images locally as well as uploading to the remote server? Just incase I want to terminate my hosted website?

It can save to both a local Website and remote Website if you tell it to.
Look at the end of the "ftp-settings.sh file" section of the Settings -> Allsky Website documentation page for how to do it.

If you don't currently have a local Website, create one and you can then manually copy files from the remote server to your Pi.
