Lizbet moved to Nantucket from Irvington, NY and taught 1st and 2nd grades at NES. Sheestablished her own preschool/kindergarten program, A Small School, after leaving thepublic school. Her philosophy of education is inspired and informed by the work ofRudolf Steiner, the Integrated Day approach of the Antioch New England Graduate School,the social curriculum and philosophy of the Mead School, as well as her background inthe arts and her practical experience in the classroom. With Elizabeth Sundell, Lizbet c-founded the Lighthouse School in 2000.The children from her original Small School wereamongst the first Lighthouse graduates. Lizbet is married to Chris Fuller and son Elihappily attends Lighthouse.

Forest grew up outside of Baltimore, Maryland and attended college at the University of North Carolina. After travelling through Europe and living in Alaska, Oregon, and North Carolina, Forest relocated to Vermont to attend law school and after receiving his degree he moved to Nantucket. After practicing law on Nantucket for about three years, he decided to pursue teaching.and earned his M.Ed. through Fitchburg State University's education program. Forest worked at the Nantucket Boys and Girls Club as a co-coordinator of the learning center and at the Cyrus Pierce Middle School, coordinating the after-school tutoring/homework program. He continues to tutor middle and high school students. Forest lives on Nantucket with his wife, three children and dog, Ringo.

Jessica moved to Nantucket to become the Artist in Residence at the First Congregational Church. A professional singer, she began voice training at the age of 14 at Washington University in St. Louis, where she went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal Performance. She specialized in Baroque vocal technique and went on to the University of North Texas for graduate study. She returned to St. Louis to begin her professional singing career. Jessica has been teaching private voice lessons for over ten years As wel as science and art classes. She teaches voice lessons for the NCMC and directs NIAM's Stars Youth Chorale. Jessica Goodenough Heuser is multi-lingual and enjoys sharing her love of languages with Lighthouse students.

Alicia developed and taught the Children's Art Program at the Creative Arts Center in Chatham, MA. An accomplished weaver, cook, and avid boater, Alicia raised and home-schooled her two sons Carl and Noah here on Nantucket with her husband Carl Keller. Alicia has taught art education programs at NISDA, the Maria Mitchell Museum, and the Nantucket Atheneum. She has taught art and served as a Teaching Assistant at the Nantucket Elementary School. Alicia joined the Lighthouse faculty in 2004 and has been integral to the vibrant Small School program ever since.

Kim grew up in Massachusetts and attended the University of New Hampshire. After college she travelled throughout Europe for a year and landed back in the states to begin teaching middle school. She taught middle school history and special education for two years in Massachusetts before moving to California. During her five years in San Diego, she worked within the Mira Mesa school system and completed her Master's in Education. Kim moved to Nantucket and worked at Small Friends as the hide-for-small Teacher in the preschool classroom. She has a favorite dog named Louie.

Sandy taught in the Gloucester and Rockport public school systems and at Lyndon Hill, a private school for dyslexic students. Moving to Nantucket with husband Carter Mitchell, Sandy served as a reading specialist at Nantucket Elementary School for 12 years. For over twenty years, she has tutored students ages 4- adult in reading and the language arts. After working in the Weezie Library for Children, she came to Lighthouse to teach the newly formed Primary 5 class in 2005 and has been building the Primary 5/6 program ever since. Sandy has two children, Caleb and Emily and her sister is our very own Cheryl Evans.

Courtney grew up in the Mid-West and landed on Nantucket after studying in London and securing aninternship with Maria Mitchell Association in environmental education. She then returned to Ohioto finish her B.A. in Early Childhood Education at Ohio University and taught for a year whileearning her M. Ed. in Reading Education and Diagnostics. She searched for a school where shecould share her love of nature with children and fulfill her wish to educate the whole child. Shefound and joined the Lighthouse School in 2010. Courtney tutors children privately, chairs theYouth Committee for the Nantucket Triathlon Club, and co-owns and runs Nantucket Bike Tours. Sheloves to run, read, bike and cook.

Kate was born on Nantucket and would return to the island in the summer to nanny. She moved back year-round after living in Brooklyn NY, where she was painting and taking classes at Parsons School of Design. Kate worked for island architects and designers, commuted to RISDI to take classes in interior design, and fulfilled her goal of traveling internationally before deciding to pursue her interest in working with children. She felt right at home walking into Lighthouse as a Teaching Assistant before taking on her own class. Kate has taught Small School through Middle Primary classes. Kate is married to Chris Andrews and enjoys painting and playing with her dog Nelson.

Barrie grew up in Nantucket with the family Fee. After attending UNH, she moved to Boston where she worked in Account Management in the advertising industry for 10 years where she met husband Grant Sanders. They moved back to Nantucket to raise their two children, Madison and Owen. Through her involvement with her own children’s education, Barrie grew interested in teaching. She began to teach with Rhonda Pollock in the Pollock's Polliwogs pre-school program. Barrie later worked at NES as a teaching assistant in the Kindergarten and 1st grade. She joined Lighthouse in 2008 as a teaching assistant and soon became a Kinderclass teacher.

Rachel grew up on Nantucket, enjoying the ocean and the smell of the fresh air. She went to Sarah Lawrence College where she studied literature and writing. She spent time on the west coast, primarily in Portland, Oregon. The Atlantic called and she rejoined the island community wholeheartedly. When she is not hide-for-smalling the Extended Day program, Rachel works as a gardener. She loves to cook and spend time with her family and friends.

Lindsey is a scholar of the natural world. Once a studio art major in New York City, she transitioned her focus to Cultural and Physical Anthropology, minoring in Russian Literature. Lindsey has worked in art galleries, printing houses, international Human Rights organizations and hospital programs. After graduating, she began working with primates to fulfill a childhood dream of “becoming Jane Goodall,” performing field research with wild monkeys in South Africa and then at a chimpanzee sanctuary in the Netherlands. She has worked on organic farms in Europe and Cape Cod and has taken up botanical folk medicine and sells her herbal body-care products locally. She joined Lighthouse in 2010, first as a volunteer at Lighthouse School and substitute before hide-for-smalling the Extended Day Program. Lindsey is a true believer of teaching by example and shares her b connection to the earth and commitment to educating others about sustainable-living. She feels blessed to have the opportunity to guide children and to work alongside them within such an inspiring, beautiful, and dedicated community of teachers and families composed of individuals who consistently cultivate, question, and take part in the magical celebration of life that is the Lighthouse School.

Carole grew up on Nantucket. While at UMass/Amherst earning her degree, she worked with toddlers in the lab school at UMass/Amherst. She returned home to Nantucket and has been working with children ever since. Carole provided childcare for families before joining the Lighthouse Faculty in the school’s second year. She served as a Kinderclass Teaching Assistant before taking on her own Small School class. Carole has been helping to build the Small School program ever since and her two children, Ethan and Ava, are now Lighthouse students.

Mollie Glazer is the Artistic Director of the Nantucket Community Music Center. She studied cello and viola da gamba at New England Conservatory and The Royal Conservatory of The Netherlands. Mollie performs regularly on Nantucket with fellow Lighthouse school teacher, Andy Bullington as well as Mary Keller. She is a regular guest soloist at The Bethlehem Bach Festival in Pennsylvania and has performed and recorded with many of this country's early music ensembles. In addition to her teaching at NLS, she also teaches "Music with Mollie" at the Nantucket Atheneum as well as lessons in cello, piano, ukulele and stringensemble for NCMC. Also a composer, Mollie has written scores for the Pennsylvania Ballet and the Emmy award winning film If the Walls Could Talk. Mollie's son, Isaiah Williams, has been a student at Nantucket Lighthouse School since day one of preschool!

An alumnus of the Berklee College of Music, Andy has been a composer, guitarist, and instrumental teacher for over twenty-five years. He lives and plays year round on Nantucket with his wife, photographer Cary Hazlegrove, and daughter Virginia who attended Lighthouse from pre-school through the 8th grade. Andy can often be found performing on-island, both solo and with ensembles. Most recently he played with the Shingles. He teaches guitar to children and adults privately in addition to his work in Nantucket classrooms.

Emily rejoined Nantucket Lighthouse School’s staff in 2011 after working as a learning specialist at Marin Country Day School in Corte Madera, California. She brings with her over 20 years of experience in schools and non-profit organizations. Beginning her career as an upper elementary educator, Emily has since worked with children from preschool through 8th grade. Through her graduate work and experiences as both a classroom teacher and school administrator, Emily has gained extensive knowledge in curriculum design and child development. She has also acquired a range of experience working with various Nantucket organizations including the Community Network for Children, the Friends of the Nantucket Atheneum, and The Children's House of Nantucket. Having served in a variety of roles in independent schools, including teacher of children pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade, learning specialist, development consultant, Board member, and parent of school-aged children, Emily offers Nantucket Lighthouse School a breadth of experience and a unique perspective. Emily is married to Schuyler Kuhl and they have two children, Sophie and Carter.

Cheryl joined the Lighthouse staff in 2004 to coordinate the school’s development and soon was named the school’s first Administrative Director. Cheryl has worked closely with the NLS Board and Co-Founders to build the administrative structure of the school. She currently serves as the Admissions Director and Business Manager. Cheryl moved to Nantucket ten years ago with husband Jeff Evans and her daughter Maggie, after spending ten years in marketing and product development for companies such as the International Data Group and monster.com. Maggie is a Lighthouse student and Cheryl's sister is NLS teacher Sandy Mitchell.

Joy recently rejoined the Lighthouse staff after moving back to Nantucket from Colorado. As Lighthouse School's first-ever Director of Development, Joy brings tremendous energy and experience to a very busy development office. In addition to her work as an archivist, Joy has also served as a campaign and event coordinator. In her free time, Joy enjoys walking, crafting, yoga, and gardening. She is also a doula and midwife's assistant. Joy is married to Greg Margolis and they have two children, Zella and Max.

Nancy has had a range of work experience in counseling, education, and business. She worked as the Front Office Manager at Nantucket Behavioral Health Services before joining the Lighthouse staff in 2008. Nancy manages the Lighthouse School office and 'womans' our front desk. When she is not managing the busy school office, she can be found caring for her two grandchildren or singing in local choral productions.
